Team Building Activities Anyone Can Use

Whether you are in a corporate setting or an educational one, the importance of teamwork is the same. Children, teens and adults can benefit from team building activities in a variety of settings and contexts. These activities are used to create initiative, build trust between teammates, enhance problem solving skills and strengthen the lines of communication. One of the best things about these activities is that they are fun to do. Here are some ideas for various activities that can strengthen a team whether it is in a corporate setting, school setting or other setting where teamwork is important:

The Lava River Exercise

For the Lava River exercise you will need a group with 12 to 24 people. You will also need 1 carpet square for every two people and four pieces of rope. Divide the space you are using into three sections of river and mark off with rope. The river should be around 20 feet wide to present a challenge. Give every two people a carpet square. Explain to participants that the river is lava and will burn up everything except for the magical carpet tiles. The tiles must be touched at all times or they are swept into the river. Everyone must make it across the river without scooting or sliding on the tiles. This exercise requires serious teamwork to get everyone across!

Blind Shapes Exercise

For this exercise, you will need 8 to 16 people and a long piece of rope. Each participant will need to be blindfolded. First, the team forms a circle with blindfolds off. Then, each participant puts their blindfold on and leader puts the rope inside the circle. The team is instructed to form a perfect square without taking their hands off the rope or taking their blindfolds off. When the team feels they have done the task they can take the blindfolds off and see how they did.

Why I am Important to the Group Exercise

This is a good self-esteem and teamwork building exercise. Each team member will write down three reasons why the group needs them. They will then walk around the room and present these three reasons in an enthusiastic way. The rest of the group will judge them on creativity, conviction and humor, giving a maximum of 20 points for each. Each participant will have a turn and be voted on, then scores will be tallied and a winner will be determined. This exercise works on friendly competition as well as teamwork importance.

These are just a few of the many team building activities you can use to strengthen your team. You can find more exercises in books or even on the Internet. If you've never tried exercises like these you will find them a fun and refreshing way to bring new energy to your team environment.
